Winchester Area SPCA Receives a $5,000 Grant from Newell Brands Charitable Foundation

The Winchester Area SPCA (WASPCA) today announced it received a grant from Newell Brands Charitable Foundation for the agency’s Pets for Life – pet retention program.

“Funding from the Newell Foundation will allow the WASPCA to significantly increase its impact on animal welfare by helping pet owners in need keep their beloved pets instead of being forced to surrender them into the overcrowded shelter system”, said Lavenda Denney, the WASPCA Executive Director.

This funding will provide pet food and financial assistance for critical issues affecting pet owners. This includes emergency veterinary care, basic vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and assistance with pet deposits when pet owners are forced to move.

In 2019, Newell Brands and the Newell Brands Charitable Foundation launched the Local Impact Grant Program which aims to better the communities where the Newell Brands operates, and their employees live. The program puts the power of giving into the hands of Newell’s employees, by inviting them to nominate and vote for local nonprofits to receive grants.

“At Newell Brands, and through our Local Impact Grant Program, we are committed to serving
the communities in which we operate. Like our iconic brands and trusted products, we know that pets are an important part of many people’s lives,” said Beth Stellato, President of the Newell Brands Charitable Foundation. “We are proud to extend our commitment to delighting our consumers by supporting the WASPCA Pets for Life Retention Program, which keeps people
and their pets together.”

About Winchester Area SPCA

The Winchester Area SPCA is a 501c3 non-profit no-kill animal welfare agency that has served the community since 1907. Our mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond and safeguard animals in transition. Over 1,200 homeless animals come through our admission center each year. Our Pets for Life pet retention program keeps over 1,000 animals out of the overcrowded shelter and with the families that love them by providing short term financial assistance to pet owners in need.  The Winchester Area SPCA serves as the municipal shelter for the City of Winchester, VA and provides supportive services to surrounding counties as our space and resources allow. We support the mission of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies and their goal of Virginia becoming no-kill. We serve as an adoption hub for rescues and shelters throughout The Commonwealth. In addition, the agency hosts both volunteer and foster programs, reading and pet enrichment programs, community events, and humane education opportunities.
