National Good Neighbor Day Is Sept. 28: Be Kind, Be Neighborly

In today’s busy, screen-filled world, it’s easy to forget that the people living next door aren’t just background noise—they’re neighbors. That’s why National Good Neighbor Day, celebrated on September 28, is a perfect reminder to connect with the real people who live near us.

Some observe Good Neighbor Day on the fourth Sunday in September, while others stick to the 28th, but the message stays the same: kindness and community start right where you live.

Being a good neighbor doesn’t require a grand gesture. Often, it starts with something simple, like a smile, a wave, or a friendly “hello.” These small moments build trust and connection.

If someone new moves in, consider welcoming them with a pie, a hot dish, or even just a note with your name and phone number. These little acts go a long way in helping others feel comfortable and supported in a new place.

Being a good neighbor also means respecting boundaries—both personal and physical. Treat your neighbor’s property with care. If you have pets, make sure they’re being neighborly, too. Keep barking to a minimum, pick up after them, and don’t let them dig in someone else’s yard or garden.

It also helps to keep your own space in order. Whether you live in a house, apartment, or condo, tidiness matters. Trim trees, shovel snow, cut the grass, and keep porches or hallways free of clutter. A well-kept property is not only good for your home—it makes the whole neighborhood a nicer place to live.

Looking out for others is another important part of neighborliness. If your neighbor is elderly or lives alone, consider checking in with them occasionally. Offer to help with chores like shoveling snow or raking leaves. Let them know you’re nearby in case of an emergency.

Being a good neighbor also includes being alert and watchful. A safe neighborhood often depends on residents keeping an eye out for anything unusual. If something doesn’t seem right, reporting it could help prevent problems for others.

And don’t forget—being neighborly can be fun, too. There’s still time to invite a neighbor over for a cookout, organize a fall cleanup, or plan a neighborhood Halloween event. Sharing laughter and time together helps build the kind of strong, friendly communities that benefit everyone.

So whether you’re meeting someone for the first time or reconnecting with a familiar face, take a moment this Good Neighbor Day to say hello, lend a hand, or share a kind word. After all, being a good neighbor costs nothing—but means everything.
