AI Granny Daisy Outsmarts Scammers, One Endless Chat at a Time

Published

on

In the fight against phone scammers, a UK mobile phone company, O2, has enlisted an unusual ally: Daisy, a digital grandmother who loves to chat—and doesn’t know when to stop. Daisy, created with artificial intelligence, is designed to waste the time of scammers while delighting in sharing endless stories about her cat, Fluffy.

Daisy’s voice and mannerisms are so convincing that scammers often believe they’re speaking to a real person. But as the conversation drags on, it becomes clear that Daisy’s endless chatter is anything but profitable for the con artist. She can keep them on the line for up to 40 minutes with stories, questions, and her “technical difficulties.”

A Clever Shield for Consumers

The idea is simple but effective. Every minute a scammer spends with Daisy is a minute they can’t use to target a real victim. By deploying this friendly AI chatterbox, O2 is helping to protect customers and fight back against fraudsters in a creative way.

While Daisy and Fluffy may not understand the scammers’ schemes, their charm and persistence turn the tables on would-be thieves, frustrating their efforts and potentially deterring future calls.

Endless Chat, Real Impact

The innovation has garnered praise for its ingenuity. By giving scammers a taste of their own time-wasting medicine, Daisy ensures that the bad guys leave empty-handed, while her cheerful demeanor keeps the whole ordeal lighthearted.

For now, Daisy and Fluffy are just one part of the effort to tackle phone scams, but they’re proving to be an effective and endearing defense.
