Master the Art of Hot Dog Etiquette This Summer with These 8 Essential Tips

Published

on

Nothing says summer like enjoying a hot dog at a picnic, barbecue, or ball game. But did you know there’s a right way to enjoy this classic treat? The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council has shared eight essential tips for perfect hot dog etiquette:

  1. Condiments on the Dog: Always put condiments directly on the hot dog, not the bun. This ensures even distribution and maximum flavor.
  2. Hands-On Only: Hot dogs in buns should always be eaten with your hands. Using utensils is a major faux pas.
  3. Savor the Flavor: Take more than five bites to eat a hot dog. It’s not a race—enjoy the experience!
  4. Finger-Licking Good: If condiments drip onto your fingers, lick them clean. Washing your hands interrupts the fun.
  5. Bun Basics: Stick to traditional buns. Tomato and basil buns might sound gourmet, but they’re a no-go for hot dogs.
  6. Napkin Necessity: Paper napkins are the best choice. They’re casual and convenient for cleaning up minor messes.
  7. Ketchup Controversy: If you’re over 18, avoid ketchup. Mustard is the preferred condiment for adults, offering a tangy complement to the hot dog.
  8. Order of Operations: Apply condiments in this order: mustard and chili first, followed by relish, onions, or sauerkraut, and finish with cheese if desired.

Follow these tips to keep your hot dog game strong and enjoy your summer favorites correctly!
