Autumn Magic Arrives in Front Royal for Festival of Leaves
The air is getting crisp, the leaves are turning, and downtown Front Royal is ready to celebrate fall with one of its most beloved traditions — the Festival of Leaves. Kicking off on Friday night, October 10, and running through Saturday, October 11, the annual event is set to draw thousands of people to Main Street for music, food, art, and the old-fashioned charm of a small town.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been a year already,” said Sue Laurence, one of the event organizers. “Time flies, but we’re ready. This year is going to be bigger and better.”
Friday Night Kicks Off the Fun
The festival opens Friday at 5 p.m. with gates opening to music, food, and drinks. Headlining the night is the popular classic rock band Cazhmiere, taking the gazebo stage from 6 to 10 p.m.
The festival’s beer garden—officially named the Oktoberfest Garden—returns with local beer, wine, and mead.
Nine vendors will be open on Friday evening, and food trucks will line the area for festival-goers looking to enjoy dinner and entertainment all in one place. Admission for Friday night is $5 per person, which helps cover the cost of the live music.
Saturday: A Full Day of Family Fun
Saturday’s events run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with streets in downtown Front Royal closed to make way for more than 200 local and regional vendors. These include artisans, potters, crafters, and food vendors, as well as unique offerings like Amish baked goods from Pennsylvania.
Families will find no shortage of entertainment. A dedicated kids’ area on Crescent Street includes face painting, bounce houses, and a pirate ship attraction presented by the Hike Kidz Foundation. While there is a fee to board the pirate ship, all proceeds benefit the foundation’s community efforts.
Three stages across town will host live music, dance performances, and exhibitions throughout the day. There will also be buskers from Mountain View Music School, giving young musicians a chance to perform in front of live audiences.
Adding to the entertainment, the Royal Bowling Center will set up a bowling lane, and the local Boy Scouts are planning a special activity—though organizers are keeping that under wraps as a surprise.
Community Effort and Volunteer Spirit
Organizing an event of this size is no small feat. Volunteers play a big part, and the committee encourages anyone interested in helping to sign up before Wednesday to receive a special yellow volunteer shirt. Volunteers assist with setup, directions, and keeping things running smoothly throughout the day.
“You’ll see yellow shirts all over town—that’s your signal that help is nearby,” Laurence explained. “We’re so lucky to have help from the schools and RMA this year, too.”
Main Street Alive with Local Businesses
Beyond the booths and performances, the event shines a light on the growing downtown business community. Stores, galleries, and restaurants along Main Street are ready to welcome festivalgoers.
Tips for Festivalgoers
Parking will be clearly marked with blue signs around town. Visitors are encouraged to follow the signs along Commerce Avenue, Jackson Street, and Royal Avenue to locate available parking spaces. While the event is pedestrian-friendly, those driving in should expect a short walk to reach the heart of the action.
A Festival Built for the Whole Community
At its heart, the Festival of Leaves is more than an event—it’s a celebration of community, creativity, and small-town pride. With nearly a full year of planning behind it and hundreds of volunteers, vendors, and performers ready to go, the weekend promises fun for everyone.
Whether you’re coming for the music, the handmade goods, the delicious food, or just to enjoy the changing season with your neighbors, there’s something waiting for you at this year’s Festival of Leaves.
So mark your calendars:
