An Open Letter of Gratitude to the Teachers in Warren County, Virginia

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week across the nation, with Tuesday, May 5th, recognized as National Teacher Appreciation Day. As Vice Chair of the Warren County School Board, I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who serve as teachers in our county—public school teachers, private school teachers, and homeschool teachers and tutors alike. The children of this great nation are our future, and without committed, caring, and self-giving teachers, that future would be far less bright.

As the father of eleven homeschooled children, I see firsthand the sacrifice my wife makes each day as she works to prepare our children intellectually, socially, morally, religiously, and culturally. I extend my deep gratitude to her and to all those who have chosen homeschooling as their educational path. To the many teachers serving in our private schools, including my colleagues at Christendom College, thank you for the daily sacrifices you make to ensure the students in your care are well-educated. And as a member of the Warren County School Board, I have seen the impact of our public school teachers throughout the county. I admire what you do and the care you bring to your vocation. Over the past several years, I have learned a great deal about our schools, and each time I speak with a teacher or gain a deeper understanding of your work, I come away with a renewed sense of respect. Thank you, one and all.

All teachers in Warren County carry a responsibility that is both demanding and deeply meaningful. Day after day, you invest your time, energy, and care into shaping the minds and character of the students entrusted to you. Your work extends far beyond the classroom—through preparation, encouragement, and countless quiet acts of dedication that may go unseen, but never without impact. For all of this, you deserve our sincere gratitude. The consistency and heart you bring to your vocation make a lasting difference in ways that cannot always be measured in the moment.

At times, the challenges of education can feel overwhelming, but it is important to remember the greater purpose behind your efforts. Each lesson taught, each student encouraged, and each moment of patience contributes to something far greater than a single school year. You are helping to form individuals who will go on to shape families, communities, and the future of our nation. Keeping your eye on that “prize” can help sustain you through difficult days—the knowledge that your work is building a foundation that will endure for generations.

An excellent education is an inestimable gift. It opens doors, cultivates virtue, sharpens judgment, and empowers young people to pursue lives of purpose and responsibility. What you provide is not merely information, but formation—guiding students toward truth, discipline, and a sense of possibility. The ripple effects of your commitment will extend far beyond Warren County, influencing society in ways both seen and unseen. Thank you for the vital role you play in that mission and for the steady, meaningful work you do each day.
