Felon Flees Traffic Stop, Caught After High-Speed Chase
On August 19, 2024, a routine traffic stop in Rappahannock County escalated into a high-speed chase, ultimately leading to the arrest of a wanted man on multiple serious charges. Deputy D. Meade initiated the traffic stop at the intersection of Hittles Mill Road and Zachary Taylor Highway after clocking the vehicle at 79 mph in a 55 mph zone. During the stop, Deputy Meade noticed a glass smoking device in plain sight, prompting a further search of the vehicle.
The search revealed a glass jar containing a substance that the driver admitted was methamphetamine. In addition, a loaded Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun was found inside the car. Upon running the driver’s information, Deputy Meade discovered that the individual’s license was suspended and that he was wanted in Warren County for multiple probation violations.
Deputy Meade informed the driver, identified as 50-year-old Christopher Eric Harpine of Front Royal, that he was not free to leave. However, as Deputy Meade secured the evidence in his patrol vehicle, Harpine made a sudden attempt to escape. He got back into his car and sped off, initiating a dangerous high-speed pursuit.

Christopher Eric Harpine
Harpine drove at speeds exceeding 100 mph as he fled into Warren County, with Deputy Meade and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office in close pursuit. The chase spanned several roads, putting other drivers at risk. Eventually, the pursuit was taken over by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police (VSP), and Deputy Meade discontinued his direct involvement. Harpine was eventually apprehended and taken into custody at the RSW Regional Jail.
As a result of the incident, Harpine now faces a litany of charges. These include multiple counts of reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, eluding law enforcement, and possession of both methamphetamine and a firearm. Harpine, who is a convicted felon, is also charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition illegally, as well as possessing a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance.
The full list of charges brought against Christopher Eric Harpine is as follows:
- Reckless driving (two counts)
- Driving on a suspended or revoked license
- Failure to wear a seatbelt
- Failure to stop at a stop sign
- Eluding law enforcement
- Obstruction of justice

- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

Harpine remains in custody at the RSW Regional Jail as he awaits further legal proceedings. This case underscores the dangers that law enforcement officers face during what might initially seem like routine traffic stops. It also highlights the swift actions of Deputy Meade and the coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies that led to the apprehension of a dangerous individual.
