Newly Established Vinicola Wine Bar Meets Community Need for Fellowship Over a Well-Crafted Collection

“The story of Vinicola Wine Bar began twenty-five years ago,” Daniel Elliott, the owner of the bar at 205A East Main Street, shared with the Royal Examiner, “around a family table in the heart of La Rioja, Spain. I was a college student living in Madrid, sharing an apartment with friends from around the world. One weekend, one of my roommates, an aspiring photographer from Logroño, the capital of Rioja wine country, invited me to visit his hometown.

One night, around a table filled with family, friends, laughter, and endless small plates, someone uncorked an unlabeled bottle of red wine. I took a sip. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted: pure, alive, soulful. I asked where I could buy a couple of bottles to take home. The people around the table chuckled. The man sitting across the table, the one who’d brought the bottles of wine, smiled and said, “Buy it? I made this in my backyard.”

That was the first time I understood that wine isn’t just a beverage, it’s a language. A way of connecting people, places, and stories. That weekend in Logroño wasn’t just about the wine; it was about community, craft, and the joy of sharing something meaningful around a table.

Years later, the world changed. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was laid off from my office job, like so many others. But rather than fight to get back to where I was, I took it as an invitation to ask a better question: What do I really want to do with my life?

My now-wife and I moved to the country, and I began working in the wine industry, from retail to private tastings, and gained hands-on experience in the nearby vineyards. I earned my sommelier certification and started Discerning Sommelier, a wine services business that connected people to bottles and experiences they’d never forget.

And now, that journey brings us to Vinicola Wine Bar. Vinicola is more than a bar. It’s a love letter to that backyard bottle in Logroño, and to everything it represented. Here, we believe that local production, family-run operations, and hospitality rooted in real care still matter. That’s why we’ve built Vinicola around Virginia wines, small producers, women winemakers, and the people in our community who really give a damn. We’re here to celebrate the people behind the bottles, the guests at our tables, and the community we’re proud to serve in Front Royal.”

Open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with fondue night on Thursdays starting at 5 p.m., Vinicola had its grand debut on October 1. According to wine aficionado Margo Kresse, the bar is already seeing many repeat customers. As indicated by the fondue night, food is also an option, which is no surprise, as in addition to being a WSET Level 3 sommelier, Elliott also serves as executive chef.

“I have also used the opportunity at Vinicola to pursue my culinary aspirations,” he explained. “Every menu item has been thoughtfully executed, inspired by my time in Spain as well as my Brazilian heritage (my mom is from Brazil). I’ve created a menu that is meant to be shared at the table and has the versatility to be paired with the wines that are on the menu. In addition to the set menu, I offer special tasting menus approximately once a month. These are ticketed events and meant to be at the level of other fine dining establishments in the region, like Field and Main, Ashby Inn, and Lauberge Provencale.”

His wife, Lauren, has played a role in creating the bar’s atmosphere through tasteful interior design.

So, whether you’re in the mood for a glass, a flight, or a bottle, this new establishment may be just what you are looking for on Main Street.
