It’s Easy to Become a Locavore!

Published

on

Whether you enjoy a varied diet or stick to vegetarian or vegan options, there’s no reason you can’t be a locavore, too! While the trend is catching on, many people are still unfamiliar with what it means. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand and join this growing movement.

What is Locavorism?
The term “locavore” was first coined in San Francisco in 2005 as part of a challenge encouraging residents to eat only foods grown or harvested within 100 miles of their home for a month. The idea was to see how much of their diet could come from local sources.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a “locally or regionally produced agricultural food product” is one that’s raised, produced, and distributed within 400 miles of its origin or within the same state. Simply put, a locavore is someone who makes a conscious effort to buy and eat food from businesses as close to home as possible.

What Are the Benefits?
Eating locally offers many advantages. For starters, it reduces pollution associated with long-distance transportation and keeps food fresher and more nutritious. Fruits and vegetables, for example, are at their best in taste and quality when they haven’t traveled long distances or been stored for long periods.

Another benefit is getting to know where your food comes from and connecting with local farmers and producers at farmers’ markets. This supports local businesses and fosters a sense of community and pride.

Becoming a locavore is a simple, rewarding way to enjoy fresh, flavorful food while supporting your local economy. Give it a try, and encourage others to do the same!
