Governor Glenn Youngkin took decisive action on a variety of bills, underscoring his commitment to driving the state’s progress forward. The governor announced the approval of 30 bills, spanning a range of bipartisan priorities while vetoing another 20 that he believes would hamper Virginia’s economic growth and burden its residents.

A Forward-Thinking Agenda

Governor Youngkin’s actions today align with his vision for Virginia as a beacon of opportunity and prosperity. “I am pleased to sign 30 bipartisan bills into law, marking a step forward in our mission to make Virginia the premier place to live, work, and raise a family,” Youngkin stated. He emphasized his call for unity and collaboration from the first day of the legislative session, aiming to “unleash opportunity for all Virginians.”

The Signed Bills: A Broad Spectrum

The governor signed 30 bills into law, touching on various aspects of Virginian life and governance. These laws, encompassing both House Bills (HB) and Senate Bills (SB), signify a concerted effort to address diverse issues and foster a conducive environment for growth and community welfare.

Key Vetoes to Safeguard Economic Growth

Conversely, Governor Youngkin vetoed 20 bills that he deemed potentially detrimental to Virginia’s economic landscape and its families. The vetoed bills included legislation that would impose new burdens on small businesses, limit effective statewide decision-making, and increase tuition fees and other expenses for families striving for success. Among the vetoed items were bills aimed at establishing gender and diversity requirements for the MEI Project Approval Commission, altering unemployment insurance eligibility, and mandating parental notification for sexually explicit content in educational materials.

The governor’s full veto statements are available here.

Balancing Progress with Prudence

Governor Youngkin’s legislative actions reflect a balance between embracing bipartisan initiatives that promise to move Virginia forward and exercising caution against measures that might constrain the state’s economic vitality or the freedoms of its businesses and citizens. By signing key bills into law and vetoing those he views as regressions, Youngkin aims to maintain Virginia’s trajectory toward becoming an even more thriving, welcoming, and opportunity-rich state.

As the governor continues to review additional legislation and spending proposals, his clear message is one of optimism and vigilance, ensuring that Virginia’s legislative environment fosters growth, innovation, and high quality of life for all its residents.
