The Lord Fairfax Health District (LFHD) is expanding its Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program services by updating its clinic schedule, adding staff, and increasing appointment availability across its service area.

Members of the Lord Fairfax Health District WIC team — including the WIC Coordinator, nutritionists, nutrition associates, office service specialists, and breastfeeding peer counselors — who provide nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and essential services to families across the region.

The expanded schedule is designed to better meet community needs, reduce wait times, and improve access to essential nutrition and health services for families.

“Our WIC Program is delighted to be able to expand its schedule to provide more clinic and office services across our service area,” said Katherine Schroeder, MPH, CHES®, Population Health Manager and Public Information Officer for the Lord Fairfax Health District. “This program is essential to supporting healthy habits for pregnant and postpartum people, infants, and children up to the age of five through nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and access to healthy foods.”

WIC is a federally funded program that provides support to eligible families, including pregnant people, new parents, infants, and children up to age five. The program offers nutrition education, breastfeeding guidance, access to healthy foods, and referrals to health care and social services.

Core WIC services include:

  • Nutrition education with individualized counseling and family-centered goal setting
  • Healthy food benefits based on WIC nutrition standards
  • Breastfeeding promotion and support through trained peer counselors
  • Developmental measurements to monitor children’s growth and development
  • Community referrals to help address gaps in care and connect families with additional services

“The WIC Program is excited to add more available clinic days,” said Alyssa Brown, LFHD WIC Coordinator. “This marks a step forward to serve more families in need.”

With additional staffing now in place, LFHD has expanded its WIC clinic schedule as follows:

  • Frederick/Winchester: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Page County: Monday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday, 8:40 a.m. – 3:50 p.m.
  • Warren County: Wednesday & Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Shenandoah County: Monday, Wednesday & Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

All WIC services are provided at local Health Department offices.

The program serves pregnant and postpartum individuals, infants, and children up to age five who meet income eligibility guidelines. Families interested in applying or learning more about eligibility are encouraged to contact their local Health Department when WIC staff are on site.

Community partners and healthcare providers are also encouraged to refer eligible families to the program.
