Warren County IT Club: Empowering Future Innovators

Published

on

Warren County’s unique and transformative initiative is helping students prepare for the tech-driven world. The This Is IT Club offers high school students an exciting opportunity to dive into technology, providing hands-on experience, mentorship, and a supportive community.

The program is entering its third year and is more than just a club—it’s a launchpad for students interested in IT, coding, and artificial intelligence (AI). Melissa Chapman, a founding member, explains, “We’re giving students the tools they need to step confidently into the tech world, whether that’s a university program or a job right out of school.”

The program’s upcoming session will run from January 10 through the end of the school year. It meets biweekly on Wednesday evenings at the Warren County library’s conference room. With a cap of 25 students, the program ensures personalized attention, and each participant receives a laptop for use during the program.

Hands-On Learning in Technology

The curriculum isn’t just about theory—it’s about real-world application. Students will engage in coding projects using Raspberry Pi computers, learn about cutting-edge developments in AI, and even tackle intimidating topics like quantum computing. Chapman recalls how students mastered “party-level knowledge” of quantum computing last year and had fun applying it in a Jeopardy-style game.

Beyond technical skills, the program emphasizes critical “soft skills,” like collaboration, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship. Participants form mock IT companies with brainstorming sessions and creative projects, fostering camaraderie and leadership.

Parent and Volunteer Involvement

Parents play a key role in the program’s success. As a parent and volunteer, Hosanna Keough shared her perspective: “It’s incredible to see how these intimidating concepts are broken down into something kids understand and get excited about. My son came away not just knowledgeable but eager to learn more.”

Keough emphasized the program’s welcoming environment, encouraging students from all backgrounds to apply. “Whether you’re a tech whiz or completely new to the subject, there’s a place for you here,” she said.

Scholarships and Career Opportunities

The program’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. In 2024, six students received scholarships to advance their IT studies, and 11 landed summer internships with local firms. These internships offered invaluable hands-on experience, from learning to track work hours to managing technical projects.

Chapman notes, “It’s not just about coding. It’s about learning how to navigate the professional world—showing up, collaborating, and contributing meaningfully to a team.”

Apply Now

Applications are open until December 24, and students are encouraged to apply regardless of their prior experience. “The application isn’t about passing or failing,” Chapman assures. “It’s about understanding how we can best support your success.”

A Program That Inspires

For many students, the This Is IT Club ignites their passion for technology. As Chapman said, “This program isn’t just about learning IT—it’s about building confidence, leadership, and excitement for the future.”

In Warren County, the future of technology is bright—and it starts here.
