Winchester Community Rocked by Embezzlement Charges
In a turn of events that has left the Winchester community in shock, a local woman has been charged with multiple counts of felony embezzlement, casting a shadow over a beloved high school baseball program. Ronda K. Gross, 51, of Winchester, finds herself at the center of a legal storm after being indicted by a Frederick County grand jury on 10 counts of felony embezzlement from the James Wood High School Baseball Diamond Club.
Gross was arrested last Thursday following a detailed investigation by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The inquiry began in October 2023 and sought to unravel financial discrepancies dating from 2016 to 2023 linked to the Diamond Club, where Gross served as the treasurer.
The Diamond Club, an organization dedicated to raising funds for the James Wood High School baseball team, supports various needs, including team meals, equipment, and apparel. It thrives on parent involvement and membership participation, making the allegations particularly disheartening for the community.
Upon turning herself in, Gross appeared before a Frederick County Circuit Court judge and was released on her own recognizance. The charges against her relate to amounts exceeding $1,000, spanning offenses from October 2016 to April 2021.
As the case is poised for its next court appearance on May 23 at the Frederick County Circuit Court, the community anxiously awaits further developments. The state police have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, suggesting more information may come to light.
Meanwhile, The Diamond Club has chosen to withhold comment during this sensitive time, underscoring the gravity of the situation and its potential impact on all involved with the James Wood High School baseball program.
The case highlights the challenges of managing volunteer-run organizations. It serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of transparency and accountability in all financial dealings, especially within community institutions.
As Winchester braces for the unfolding legal proceedings, many are left wondering about the long-term implications for the Diamond Club and the high school’s baseball program, both integral parts of the local community fabric.
