Helping Your Teen Get Ready for the Driving Test

Published

on

For many teens, getting a driver’s license is a big step toward independence. But before they can hit the road on their own, they have to pass the driving test—a challenge that can bring nerves for both teens and parents. If you have a young driver at home, there are a few simple ways you can help them feel more confident and prepared.

One of the best ways to support your teen is by simulating the test. Take on the role of the driving examiner and ask your teen to complete common tasks like changing lanes, making turns, or parallel parking. While they practice, stay calm, patient, and encouraging. Helping them feel at ease behind the wheel can go a long way toward building their confidence.

Another useful strategy is to talk about real-life driving situations when you’re riding together. Point out both good and bad habits of other drivers on the road. For example, if someone forgets to signal or speeds through a school zone, use it as a teaching moment. It’s also a great time to remind your teen of important safety steps, such as checking mirrors, using turn signals, and staying aware of cyclists and pedestrians.

Perhaps most importantly, be a good role model. Teens learn a lot from watching how their parents drive. If you stay calm in traffic, follow the speed limit, and avoid aggressive behavior like tailgating, your teen is more likely to pick up those habits as well.

Practice time matters too. Try to schedule regular driving sessions at different times of day, including after dark. The more varied their experience, the more prepared they’ll be for anything they might face during the test—or later on the road.

And here’s a tip for parents: if it’s been a while since you got your own license, consider brushing up on the rules. Borrow your teen’s driving manual to review road signs, right-of-way rules, and safe driving tips. You might be surprised at what you’ve forgotten over the years.

With patience, practice, and encouragement, your teen can face their driving test with confidence—and be one step closer to becoming a safe, skilled driver.
