It’s cold! …so why are snakes out?

This Eastern Gartersnake arrived at BRWC with several deep cuts after being attacked by a domestic cat.

Our veterinary team surgically repaired the lacerations and started the snake on antibiotics right away, to prevent the type of serious infection that often develops when reptiles sustain open wounds.

Eastern Gartersnakes are one of the most common and beneficial snake species in Virginia. They help control rodent and insect populations, and they are harmless to people. When threatened, their first instinct is to flee, but colder weather slows their movements and makes them more vulnerable to outdoor pets and other hazards.

We’ve admitted more snakes than usual this month despite the drop in temperatures, likely because snakes are seeking shelter sites and are easier to catch when they’re sluggish.

One of our permitted local rehabilitators has taken this gartersnake (as well as two others) for overwinter care now that their medical needs have been addressed. These rehabilitators are trained individuals who can continue recovery at home for patients who are stable but not ready for release. Their support frees up space, staff time, and resources in our hospital so we can focus on the wildlife with the most serious medical needs.

Cat attacks are one of the leading causes of injury to small wildlife. Even minor bites can introduce bacteria that lead to fatal infections. Keeping cats indoors, or supervised and on a leash or in a catio, protects both wildlife and the cats themselves from disease, injury, and environmental hazards.
