Winchester-Frederick County stalwarts Kathy and Nick Nerangis were honored for their generosity to Lord Fairfax during the LFCC (Lord Fairfac Community College) Educational Foundation’s annual appreciation luncheon on Friday.

During a ceremony in Richmond earlier this week, the Nerangises received the 2018 Annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy from the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education. The couple, who own several McDonald’s restaurants, the Country Inn and Suites, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and the Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille, were nominated for the award by Lord Fairfax Community College.

For more than 25 years, Kathy and Nick Nerangis have thrown their financial support behind LFCC. In 2017, they endowed a scholarship in memory of Nick’s parents, Martha and James Nerangis, which helps support single parents attending LFCC.

Kathy has chaired both the LFCC College Board and the Educational Foundation Board. She is also the founder of First Night Winchester and was the first woman to serve on the Winchester Medical Center Board.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Nick later earned a degree in theater from Shenandoah University, and has also taken classes at LFCC. He currently serves on SU’s Board of Trustees.

“Kathy and Nick Nerangis are such inspirations – their tireless efforts to give back to their community have gone so far in making the Winchester-Frederick County area a wonderful place to live, learn, heal and play,” says LFCC Foundation Executive Director Liv Heggoy. “We are thrilled their generosity to Lord Fairfax is being recognized at the state level.”

Also during Friday’s luncheon, 2000 alumna Renee Culbertson was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. A current member of the Executive Board of the Virginia Municipal Clerks Association – and its president in 2015-2106 – she has served as the deputy clerk of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors for nearly 17 years.

The luncheon serves as an opportunity for the foundation to thank its donors, and for donors to meet with recipients of the many scholarships offered at the college. The foundation has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships in the 2017-2018 year.
